Markel Corporation has named Kara Owens managing director of its Global Cyber Executive, the company has announced. In her new role, Owens will lead Markel’s enterprise-wide cyber strategy and work with underwriting teams to develop best practices for cyber products in all of the company’s divisions.

“With Kara’s experience and knowledge of global cyber risks, I am excited to have her join our team and help build our brand in the cyber product space,” said Robin Russo, chief underwriting officer. “The number and complexity of cyber exposures have grown exponentially over the last few years, and this is an important segment for us to build and strengthen.”

Prior to joining Markel, Owens served as global head of cyber risk for TransRe. In that capacity, she managed the company’s cyber portfolio, coordinated enterprise risk management for cyber exposures for all classes of business, tracked emerging exposures and implemented strategies for cyber treaty and facultative underwriting. She has also served as a senior risk analyst for Guy Carpenter.

Owens is an honours graduate of Temple University. She holds RPLU, CPCU, AIS and ARe designations.
