Insurer RACQ' has identified Friday the 18th as the most dangerous day of the year to be behind the wheel, and urged Queenslanders to be more vigilant about road safety.

An analysis of more than 72,000 RACQ insurance car crashes from Jan. 1, 2015 to Feb. 28, 2018 showed the last day of the working week as the riskiest in the state, with 10,804 crashes.

“Our claims data found Friday is the most common day of the week to have a crash and the 18th is the most common day of the month for collisions,” said Kirsty Clinton, RACQ spokesperson. She identified 3pm - 4pm as “the most likely time to have a crash.”

RACQ data also revealed Sunday as the day of the week motorists were least likely to crash, with 9,887 crashes.

“It may be due to the fact there are less people on the road, or perhaps we’re all more patient on a Sunday,” Clinton said.

The remaining days of the week logged the following number of crashes over the three-year period:

  • Thursday – 10,605 crashes
  • Wednesday – 10,508 crashes
  • Tuesday – 10,418 crashes
  • Monday – 10,341 crashes
  • Saturday – 9,929 crashes

Clinton reminded Queenslanders to “take extra care” on the road whether it is Friday, Sunday, or any other day of the week.
