Amid a myriad of retirements, insurers and brokers are focused on bringing young professionals into the industry. Insurance Business UK Rising Star in 2021 Yasmin Carter-Esdale, account handler at Risk Management Partners, shared with Insurance Business how to attract young and diverse people to the insurance industry.

In an Insurance Business Talk podcast, which you can listen to here, Carter-Esdale shared that she entered the insurance industry when she was 17-years-old, aiming to find fulfilling work that pays well.

However, entering a workplace “full of men in suits” can be intimidating for young people, she acknowledged, especially those without any work experience.

“I think for anyone walking through an environment where they might not fit in … there's always going to be a bit of apprehension, so I think it's really the responsibility of the team leader in the company to make sure that the people [who] feel that they might not fit in do actually feel included … and their voices are being heard,” Carter-Esdale told Insurance Business global managing editor Paul Lucas during the Insurance Business Talk podcast.

During her first insurance job as an insurance broker at The A&A Group, Carter-Esdale said her team leader made her feel included in the workplace despite being young and one of only four women in her department by “running through the job role and what it really entails,” emphasising that “even though we might not have the same skills as our peers, there are advantages to it,” including having a unique personality that can boost the team.
