The family of Abby Hartley is gifting to charity some of the $230,000 raised to bring her home.

Hartley is a New Zealand mother who died in Bali hospital after the government and her insurance company refused to grant a medical evacuation. She reportedly failed to disclose a pre-existing medical condition to her insurer, which led to her claim being denied.

An article by NZ Herald detailed the post of the Hartleys on the Givealittle page, where the massive crowdfunding effort for their mum started. The family thanked their supporters and shared the news that they were donating the money they did not need. They reportedly decided to split $50,000 between three charities – the Mental Health Foundation, Starship children’s hospital and to a school in Bali, where Richard and Toby Hartley were welcomed to play football as a break from the hospital.

“Time and thought has gone into this and we decided to go with charities that were close to mum’s heart and ours,” the post read. “From here on out, we are trying to get back into a bit of normality and get everything back on track, it’s what mum would’ve wanted.”

Hartley’s case, meanwhile, had resulted in a spike in travel insurance queries, with Allianz Partners recently reporting its call centre and medical assessments team received more calls across one day than they usually receive in a week.
