A man with a passion about continuing education and empowering actuaries to tap the many opportunities available to their profession has taken the helm at the Actuaries Institute, it has been announced.

Replacing Jenny Lyons as the new president of the Actuaries Institute is John Evans. He is joined by Nicolette Rubinsztein as senior vice president and Hoa Bui as vice president.

Evans said that while traditional areas of work for actuaries, such as general insurance, life insurance, and superannuation, will continue to remain important, big data analysis will be a key driver of growth for the profession. Some 18% of the institute’s members currently work with data analytics.

“The world has changed significantly since the Actuaries Institute was established over 50 years ago, in 1963,” Evans said. “There are significant, but not insurmountable, challenges ahead. Scale and growth is important to the profession, and we will take an active role in the globalisation process that is well underway.”

To ensure actuaries remain up to the task of meeting the demands in emerging practice areas and across global professions, as well as retain and attract new members, Evans stressed the important task of the institute to “identify and cater for emerging practice” and “provide alternative career paths” for actuaries.

Evans is the director of a specialist consultancy business and former head of risk and actuarial studies at the University of New South Wales Business School. He also previously held roles at the dean's unit at the University of Sydney Business School.
