The New Year is always supposed to arrive with a bang – but this time the party nearly turned into tragedy in an incident that will have caught the attention of public liability insurers across the country.

Revellers were evacuated around the foreshore of Terrigal, New South Wales, while technicians were sent diving into the water following what has been described as a “freak” event. It has been revealed that a firework exploded inside its canister and subsequently prompted other fireworks to ignite, ultimately setting a barge on fire.

In a report by the Newcastle Herald and Stuff.co.nz, it was highlighted that businessman David Lambert held a crowd funding campaign for around $40,000 to hold the event and offer the “best fireworks on the coast.” However, a shocking turn of events saw his one-man vision turn into a nightmare.

On the insurance side of things, Lambert had reportedly been able to gain public liability insurance alongside suitable approvals from the emergency services and Central Coast Council. However, a claim may now be likely after one of the Ka-Boom Fireworks employees needed to swim for safety as a result of the fireworks catastrophe.

Fortunately, there was no risk to the public during the incident.
