If insurtech firms are to be believed, many people in the industry could be making the journey from an incumbent insurance firm to a technology player over the coming years.

Laura Kalomiris (pictured), director of operations at Trov, has taken a similar path having moved from roles within both Hollard and Suncorp to her current position at the cutting edge of insurance technology. She noted that her background has proved extremely beneficial.

“One of the best things that has assisted me in my role as director of ops for Australia is my experience and relationships in the traditional insurance industry,” Kalomiris told Insurance Business. “I have a good understanding of the compliance and regulations in the industry, which has allowed me to provide my team with insight on what we need to consider when launching new features or products.”

Kalomiris said that her insurance background has proved valuable throughout her time at Trov, as insurtech firms have to remember the ‘insurance’ part of their role as well as the tech.

“It has made the relationship with our partners a little bit smoother and easier to have those conversations around whether something is going to work or not in the Australian market.”

"To have a successful product in any region, there needs to be a level of compliance along with innovation to ensure we stand out from the rest. Having first-hand experience in the industry has definitely made this easier."

With Suncorp as a partner in Australia, and other established industry firms partnering around the world, Kalomiris noted that Trov seeks out insurance partners with a culture of innovation.

“Trov is building an entirely new approach to insurance. One that is on-demand, specific to just the items you want to cover, and entirely from a mobile device.

“People have come to expect the same level of convenience and customer experience from their insurance provider as they do other popular apps and services. At Trov, we put people first and use technology to create a more streamlined experience fit for today’s on-the-go lifestyles.”

To hear more from Laura Kalomiris, be sure to attend the inaugural Insurance Business Insurtech Summit at the Amora Hotel Jamison Sydney on Tuesday, May 08.

This event has been accredited for 5 CPD points by the National Insurance Brokers Association (NIBA).
