Gallagher Bassett Australia has appointed Scott Newland (pictured) as head of sales & client services - general insurance, following more than 20 years in the insurance industry. Newland has spent about a decade with Gallagher Bassett, including leading its Australian claims operations and services division. He most recently served as general manager - general insurance. In his new position, Newland will oversee sales and client services for the general insurance business, with the company saying the role will support its work with government, carrier, corporate, and Lloyd’s of London markets.
Newland said the general insurance division had been among the most rewarding parts of his career and that he would work with clients and the broader market. “The last few years working in Gallagher Bassett’s general insurance division have been some of the most rewarding of my career, and I’m looking forward to working closely with our clients and more broadly the market,” Newland said. He also said Gallagher Bassett expects its team to double in size over the next five years. “Our team expects to double in size over the next five years and, though this target is ambitious, I’m confident that our expertise and experience in general insurance will strengthen our existing partnerships and accelerate growth in new markets,” he said.
David Bradbury has commenced a five-year term as deputy chair of the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA), with responsibility for overseeing APRA’s work in superannuation. His appointment completes APRA’s new executive board after Treasurer Jim Chalmers announced Bradbury and Therese McCarthy Hockey as deputy chairs in July. McCarthy Hockey, who has been with APRA for eight years and became an APRA member in October 2022, will continue to oversee banking. APRA member Suzanne Smith will retain responsibility for general, life, and private health insurance.
Bradbury said his priorities included working with APRA’s executive board, employees, and stakeholders to support the regulator’s mandate and the superannuation sector. “I am honoured to be appointed deputy chair of APRA and pleased to commence in the role. I look forward to working with the executive board, APRA colleagues, and stakeholders to support APRA’s mandate and ensuring Australia’s superannuation sector continues to deliver sound outcomes for members,” Bradbury said.
APRA chair John Lonsdale said Bradbury’s experience in economic policy, regulation, and public administration would complement the board’s existing expertise. “Together, APRA’s members are well placed to oversee APRA’s work to maintain the safety and resilience of Australia’s financial system for the benefit of the community,” Lonsdale said. While Bradbury will oversee superannuation, the broader executive board structure includes separate responsibility for insurance, banking, and other areas of APRA’s mandate.
