Only three weeks after a severe hailstorm struck Melbourne, insurer AAMI, part of insurance giant Suncorp, revealed that it has already assessed more than 3,295 vehicles damaged by the event.

According to the firm, AAMI, GIO, Apia, Shannons, and Suncorp insurance customers impacted by the December 19 storm have been able to access the Hail Assessment Centre and have their vehicle damage assessed since the facility’s establishment on December 22.

“Our Hail Assessment Centre team has been processing around 600 vehicles per day during the festive period, and we aim to increase this during the coming week,” said Anna Cartwright, AAMI’s head of motor claims.

Cartwright said the facility, located in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, was designed to quickly assess and triage all hail-affected vehicles, to make the repair process as seamless and efficient as possible.

“We have both assessors and specialist repairers, including paintless dent removal and windscreen repairers to triage vehicles and determine best method of repair,” she said. “We also have consultants available to help customers with total loss claims including processing payments on site. Where possible, we’ve also taken steps to ensure vehicles with minor damage are roadworthy until additional repairs can be completed, such as replacing broken windows and windshields.”

The insurer is urging all impacted customers to lodge their claim as soon as possible.

“Customers can lodge their claim online at www.aami.com.au or whichever Suncorp brand they are covered with,” Cartwright said. “Once they’ve lodged their claim, customers will receive an appointment time and location to bring their vehicle for assessment.

The Hail Assessment Centre operates 7am-5pm on weekdays, and 7am-4pm Saturdays until further notice.
