More than a million motorists have still not claimed their green slip refunds, which are worth up to $120, the New South Wales government has announced.

The partial refund on NSW motorists’ green slips follows last year’s overhaul of the state’s compulsory third-party car insurance (CTP) scheme, which slashed up to $172 a year off CTP premiums.

The refund scheme is expected to return about $300m to roughly four million NSW vehicle owners with policies starting before Dec. 1, 2017.

To date, more than $136m in refunds have already been forked out to 2.32 million people, but $50m remains unclaimed by more than 1.3 million people, with Liverpool, Leumeah, and Camden having the biggest number of unclaimed refunds, news.com.au reported.

The deadline for claiming green slip refunds has been extended from Sept. 30 to June 30 next year.

“There are so many families and households who could benefit from these refunds, which is why we are extending the deadline,” said Victor Dominello, NSW Finance minister. “Claiming a refund is simple and easy and can be done via Service NSW either online, over the phone, or in store. The new CTP scheme is a triple win for motorists who receive a cheaper green slip, a partial refund on what they paid last year and faster benefits should they be injured on the road.”
