A new campaign has been launched to help protect Victorian cyclists, hundreds of thousands of which were believed to be at-risk of huge public liability payouts and other unwanted bills.

Cycling Victoria said that of the almost one million Victorians who ride a bike at least once a week, only an estimated 5%, or around 50,000, may be adequately insured in the event of a simple accident.

The group, which represents some 10,000 registered cyclists, is urging Victorian cyclists to check their personal insurance policies as they roll out their new campaign “Are You Covered?” NewsMaker reported.

Kipp Kaufmann, Cycling Victoria chief executive, said the campaign was designed to reassure cyclists that “if you’re properly insured, it’s safe for you to ride, and for others to ride with you.”

“About 50,000 cyclists have public liability, third-party property and personal insurance, along with personal accident cover and cover for non-Medicare expenses and income protection,” Kaufmann said. “But we fear most of the others who ride regularly are not adequately covered.”

The campaign will see reminder notices posted on Cycling Victoria’s media network and at its events, and at clubs, directing cyclists to the insurance information website managed by the group, the report said.

Kauffman appealed to all cyclists to see what coverage they have by checking their current insurance policies against Cycling Australia policies.
