Young Insurance Professionals (YIPs) Australia and New Zealand named its latest president this week after former leader James Smorthwaite officially stepped down at the start of October.

“Leading YIPs over the past 14 months has been an exceptionally rewarding experience, both professionally and personally,” Smorthwaite said following the announcement.

“It has been my pleasure and privilege to work alongside the talented and ambitious young professionals that comprise our branch and Australasian committees,” he added.

Smorthwaite’s resignation comes as the Perth young gun seeks to focus fully on the next stage of his career, as an insurance broker with JLT.

Former YIPS vice president Katie Stephenson was confirmed as Smorthwaite’s successor, after being voted into the position during an annual general meeting in late September.

“These past 12 months has been a time of professional and personal growth for me and the decision to put myself forward for the role of president was not taken lightly,” said Stephenson, who has been part of the YIPS committee for five years – first as a treasurer and then as vice president.

“YIPs has grown from grass roots to now being the largest, not-for-profit insurance organisation for young professionals in Australia and New Zealand – something we are very proud to have achieved in seven years,” said Stephenson, a business development specialist with Marsh.

“As we close 2018 and enter a new year, we will continue to benefit our industry with new and exciting initiatives delivered with the same passion we are well known for,” she added.

Outgoing president Smorthwaite congratulated Stephenson on the appointment and encouraged other young insurance professionals to apply for a position on their local branch committee – especially if they’re committed to advancing their leadership skills.

“Katie has demonstrated dedication, vision and passion for the organisation and its goals,” he said. “I wish Katie, YIPs, and all members the very best in future.”
