Two Australian general insurers have structured distinct activations around National Rugby League properties ahead of and during the 2026 season, with Youi building a fan engagement platform around State of Origin and Budget Direct linking charitable donations to results between clubs it sponsors.

Youi builds tiered verification system for Origin supporters

Youi has opened a digital platform called Youi Origin Verified to New South Wales and Queensland fans for the duration of the 2026 State of Origin series. The platform was built in conjunction with the NRL and asks participants to complete a set of tasks – among them, answering State of Origin trivia and locating a code word – to accumulate points toward a verified fan status. Five tiers determine where a participant lands: Bandwagoner, Casual Fan, Loyalist, Diehard, and The Immortal. Those who complete the process receive a digital graphic they can share on social media and are entered into draws for $50 NRL Shop vouchers and a limited-edition commemorative pin.

A separate prize sits at the top of the program. The participant who finishes with the highest overall score will receive two tickets to Game 2 of the 2027 State of Origin, to be held at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand. The company notes this will be the first time the interstate fixture has been contested outside Australia since 1987. The package includes Diamond-category tickets listed at $1,500, return flights from the winner’s nearest capital city, and two nights’ accommodation also valued at $1,500. The platform runs a live leaderboard throughout the series that displays the aggregate performance of verified fans from each state, framing participation as a competition between NSW and Queensland supporter bases.

Youi chief marketing officer Angela Greenwood connected the initiative to the company’s existing sports positioning. “At Youi, we believe footy exists because of the fans who live and breathe it. Youi Origin Verified turns fan passion into something tangible. It recognises the loyalty, knowledge, and rituals that set true Origin supporters apart and gives them a way to wear that with pride. This is about showing up for fans in a way that’s never been done before – putting them at the centre of the Origin story and recognising them as the heartbeat of the game,” Greenwood said.

Former NSW Blues captain Brad Fittler, who played 31 games for the state and captained eight series victories, and former Queensland representative Kevin Walters, who appeared in 20 Origin matches, have been engaged to promote the campaign. “State of Origin is built on pride, passion, and rivalry, and that’s what makes it so special. Youi Origin Verified gives fans a chance to put their loyalty to the test, have a bit of fun with their mates, and prove they really know their footy. Origin fans love backing their state, and this is a fantastic way to be a part of the competition throughout the series,” Fittler said.

Budget Direct introduces donation structure tied to club match results

Budget Direct has announced the Budget Direct Footy Charity Championship, a program that connects the insurer’s existing sponsorship arrangements with Melbourne Storm, the Dolphins, and the South Sydney Rabbitohs to charitable giving. Across the NRL regular season, the three clubs compete against each other in scheduled fixtures, and their head-to-head record against one another determines how much Budget Direct donates to each club’s nominated charity: $100,000 for the top-placed club, $50,000 for second, and $25,000 for third.

Melbourne Storm has nominated the Starlight Children’s Foundation. The timing of the announcement coincides with Storm’s annual Starlight Round on May 30 at AAMI Park, which this year also marks a decade of partnership between the club and Starlight. In the days preceding the round, representatives from Budget Direct and Melbourne Storm visited the Starlight Express Room at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, spending time with patients, families, and staff.

Melbourne Storm CEO Justin Rodski said the club views the added layer of corporate support as significant. “Starlight Round holds a special place in our club, and to celebrate 10 years of partnership with Starlight with the additional support of Budget Direct makes this year even more significant. We’re proud to have Budget Direct supporting our partnership with Starlight through the Footy Charity Championship. Their contribution will help raise vital funds and awareness for Starlight and the children who need it most,” Rodski said.

Budget Direct chief growth officer Jonathan Kerr described the insurer’s approach to club partnerships. “Our sponsorships are first and foremost partnerships where we collaborate to invest in what matters most to the clubs, the players, and their communities. It’s truly an honour to help deepen this important, long-standing relationship between Storm and Starlight and so rewarding to see the Budget Direct Footy Charity Championship harness the power of sport to bring people together and drive positive impact,” Kerr said.

Storm prop Josh King, who described himself as a regular visitor to the Starlight Express Room, also commented on the partnership. “Every visit to Starlight is a powerful reminder of what really matters and how much these moments mean for the kids and their families. As players, we’re proud to wear the purple jersey and represent Starlight, and we’re grateful to have partners like Budget Direct supporting the cause through the Footy Charity Championship,” King said. The program also includes a public competition component. Fans who enter before July 26 are eligible to win one of three $10,000 cash prizes, with Budget Direct pledging a further $10,000 per winner to a charity of the winner’s choice.

Insurer involvement in sport extends across codes and causes in 2026

The two NRL-linked announcements sit within a wider pattern of Australian insurers directing sponsorship spend across multiple sports and charitable causes this year. Earlier in 2026, Youi launched Kick for a Cause at NRL Magic Round Brisbane in conjunction with the Australian Rugby League Commission. The initiative drew in all 17 NRL clubs and 11 paediatric cancer centres across Australia and New Zealand, with a fundraising target of $1 million directed at improving care for children with cancer in communities where NRL clubs are based.

In netball, HCF has extended its principal partnership with GIANTS Netball to 2028, a commitment that will bring the relationship to 10 seasons since the club’s debut in Suncorp Super Netball in 2017, with HCF retaining placement on the playing kit and match-day and digital platforms. QBE Insurance and the Sydney Swans are marking 40 years of association in 2026, a relationship now covering both the AFL and AFLW programs. The QBE-funded Goals for Good initiative, which donates $1,000 for every goal scored at the Sydney Cricket Ground, has directed more than $400,000 to community organisations since it began in 2018.

WFI Insurance holds the presenting sponsorship of Tour de Cure’s 2026 Signature Tour, a 1,400-kilometre charity ride between Canberra and Hobart passing through regional and rural towns, with a $2 million fundraising target for cancer research, support, and prevention. Each overnight stop sees $10,000 directed to a local cancer charity. Suncorp’s AAMI brand has entered a new arrangement with WA Football as naming rights partner of the AAMI WA Football State Talent Program and as premier partner across the WAFL, WAFLW, WAFL Colts, and junior competitions. AAMI has also continued its collaboration with NDIS-registered provider What Ability, hosting an all-abilities day at AAMI Park that involved more than 350 people living with disability alongside families, carers, and volunteers.

At the international level, Allianz Group has entered a multi-year agreement with Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, who takes on the role of global brand ambassador. The arrangement is connected to The Jannik Sinner Foundation and to Allianz’s existing position as insurer of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements through 2032. In rugby union, broker Gallagher has formalised a three-year principal partnership with the ACT Brumbies, covering the Swyftx Super Rugby Pacific side and the Super Rugby Women’s team through the end of the 2028 season.
