The insurance industry has been supporting customers impacted by severe storms and floods across eastern and South Australia.

Since November 24, 2023, heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms have impacted eastern Australia – first hitting parts of South Australia and Victoria. The extreme weather resulted in flooding across Naracoote, South Australia and Torquay, Victoria. The heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms then continued to move across New South Wales (NSW) and southeast Queensland, resulting in flooding on the NSW South Coast.

IAG’s response to extreme weather event

IAG – along with its brands NRMA Insurance, CGU, and WFI – is on the ground supporting customers impacted by the severe weather.

The insurance giant’s teams have been assessing the damage to customers’ properties and conducting emergency Make Safe repairs where required. Meanwhile, property claims consultants are on standby to move into NRMA Insurance branches in Ulladulla, Vincentia, and Bega to provide face-to-face support for affected customers and communities if required.

Luke Gallagher, executive general manager claims at NRMA Insurance, reminded affected customers to lodge a claim once they are safe to do so.

“It’s storm season, which means everyone needs to closely monitor weather alerts as severe weather can appear at short notice, and especially, stay safe,” he said. “The storms over the past few days have impacted many parts of the east coast, as well as South Australia, and we urge any of our customers who have experienced damage to their vehicle or property to contact us immediately and lodge a claim so we can provide immediate help.”

As of November 30, IAG had received 1,251 claims related to the extreme weather event, with the majority of damage to properties.

Other insurers’ response to extreme weather event

In response to the Bureau of Meteorology’s (BoM) severe thunderstorm warnings, Suncorp Group (Suncorp) has reminded customers to stay safe and lodge claims once they are safe to do so.

Suncorp and its brand, AAMI, have been supporting customers impacted by the extreme weather event, including providing tips and assisting them in the claims process.

Suncorp and AAMI recently outlined Australia’s top 10 storm hotspots to help Australians in the identified locations and surrounding areas prepare for the storm season.
