CHU has reopened its strata Green Grant Program for a second year, and is asking brokers and strata managers to help find the committees that can use it.
The strata underwriting agency is offering a grant pool of up to $50,000 for residential strata buildings, with individual grants of up to $10,000. Projects must address at least one of two pillars. The first is environmental sustainability, such as energy efficiency, waste reduction and water conservation. The second is social impact, such as community wellbeing, accessibility and safety. Applications close on March 19, 2027, and recipients will be announced on June 18, 2027.
Eligibility is limited. The program is open only to CHU Residential Strata Insurance policyholders who have held their policy for three or more consecutive years. Applications must be lodged by the body corporate, strata committee or an owner, and CHU will not accept submissions from intermediaries.
CHU chief executive Kimberley Jonsson still wants brokers involved. “We’d encourage every strata manager and broker to share this with their clients. They can’t apply on a client’s behalf, but they are often the first people a committee turns to, and a timely conversation could be the difference between a great idea and a funded project,” she said.
The first round awarded $50,000 across seven strata communities, for projects including rooftop solar, apartment electrification, community gardens, composting, native habitat restoration and recycling.
CHU said the program comes as strata residents weigh how to fund sustainability and safety upgrades alongside essential maintenance, with limited sinking funds often pushing worthwhile projects down the priority list.
For brokers with strata clients, the first step is to check which buildings meet the three-year CHU requirement. Committees will then need time to agree on a project and gather quotes, photos or reports before March. As Jonsson said, a conversation now is what turns an idea into a funded project.
