nib Group (nib) has released its 2021 Sustainability Report, highlighting its health and environmental initiatives.

Mark Fitzgibbon, nib managing director and chief executive officer, said the company prioritises promoting good health across communities and taking care of the environment.

In FY21, nib's environmentally-friendly initiatives include:

  • Transitioning to renewable energy at all nib-controlled locations and committing to being carbon neutral by the end of FY22;
  • Developing its responsible investment policy to enhance the SRI screening of its investment portfolio; and
  • Launching the Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

“We're as committed as any company to protecting the natural environment and ultimately achieving a net-zero carbon footprint,” Fitzgibbon said. “Yet we're responsible for a relatively small amount of greenhouse gas emissions and regard population health as easily the area in which we can have the greatest impact.”

For the same financial year, nib's health initiatives include:

  • Over $2.7 million in funding for numerous community health initiatives, including through the Group's charitable organisation, nib foundation;
  • Supporting Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei iwi members through health management programs and introduction of Kaiārahi (iwi health navigators); and
  • Kicking off its Payer to Partner (P2P) journey to become a true health partner for its members.

nib has also published its inaugural Modern Slavery Statement and introduced its first-ever Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan to foster a sense of community.

“We're rapidly building our capability and involvement in improving population health outcomes and especially redressing unacceptable gaps in care between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples,” Fitzgibbon said. “There's no better example of progress being made than our partnership with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei in New Zealand.”

The release of nib's 2021 Sustainability Report coincides with the release of its 2021 Community Report, showcasing the Group's partnerships, personal stories, and initiatives as it continues to invest in improving communities' health.
