IAG New Zealand has mobilised support as Cyclone Alfred wreaked havoc on the eastern coast of Australia.

Cyclone Alfred hit New South Wales and Queensland over the weekend and caused widespread damage across heavily populated areas.

The slow-moving weather system is prompting the insurer to mobilise resources in anticipation of significant claims.

Wayne Tippet, executive general manager of claims, expressed deep concern for residents in the cyclone's projected path.

"Our thoughts are with those who may be affected by the cyclone, and anyone here who has whānau or friends in Australia, preparing for the worst," Tippet said. "Sadly, we know all too well the fear and uncertainty these events create, having experienced similar situations in New Zealand."

IAG New Zealand, which operates under the AMI, State, and NZI brands, has prepared teams to travel across the Tasman to assess property damage in the cyclone's aftermath.

Additionally, New Zealand-based staff are positioned to provide remote support to affected customers and assist IAG Australia's disaster response teams with behind-the-scenes operations.

The upcoming assistance continues a well-established pattern of trans-Tasman collaboration between the insurance groups during major natural disasters.

"We have a shared history of collaborating with our trans-Tasman colleagues in disaster event response," Tippet said. "Most recently, IAG Australia sent a team of property assessors to support our initial triaging and rapid assessment of properties damaged during the North Island floods and cyclone Gabrielle, and memorably when we assisted in Brisbane following the 2011 floods."

IAG New Zealand said that its support for Australian operations will not impact its ongoing claims assessments and operations for its New Zealand claimants. The company intends to work with IAG Australia in the coming weeks to determine ways to support affected communities once the full extent of cyclone Alfred's impact becomes clear.
