Following the announcement that Suncorp New Zealand CEO Paul Smeaton will be departing from the insurer, the Insurance Council of New Zealand has revealed that Craig Olsen from IAG will succeed Smeaton as its president.

Smeaton, according to a statement from ICNZ, will return to Australia to take up a senior role with Suncorp on July 20.

“I want to acknowledge Paul’s valuable contribution to ICNZ over the past five years including as vice president for two years, and most recently as president,” said Olsen, who is currently ICNZ’s vice president.

“I look forward to continuing to work with ICNZ and our members to advance the vital role that the general insurance sector has in protecting New Zealanders in their everyday lives and businesses.”

Olsen has been with IAG for over 27 years, and has been the company’s CEO for New Zealand since 2016. He held several senior roles in the insurer’s Australian and Indonesian markets, before moving to New Zealand in 2012 as executive general manager.
