A recent survey has revealed that a shocking number of Kiwis fall victim to burglaries, highlighting the importance for brokers in ensuring their clients take appropriate security steps to avoid claims.

The survey, commissioned by AA Insurance and carried out by Colmar Brunton, polled 1,100 people across the country and was provided to the New Zealand Herald for their series of data-based reports on crimes.

According to the survey, one in three Kiwis has experienced a burglary, with 63% of those burglaries happening while people were away from their home for less than 24 hours.

The research also found that of those targeted by burglars, 13% were home when the burglary happened, 23% were away for a short period, and 39% were away on a holiday.

The survey also highlighted that 85% of the respondents locked their home “every time” they left, 20% left a spare key on the property, and 61% locked the doors while they were at home, New Zealand Herald said.

In terms of home security, the survey found that 49% of Kiwis had deadlocks on their doors, 48% had window locks installed; 34% had an audible alarm, and 24% had a dog guarding their homes.

Meanwhile, 21% of the respondents said they had a safety chain on the front door, 14% had a safe for valuables, 12% had a monitored alarm system, and 8% had CCTV or security cameras.

Only 8% of Kiwis surveyed were found to have no security, the report said.
