The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) has appointed John McDermott (pictured above) as assistant governor and general manager – digital solutions and security.

McDermott, who joined RBNZ in 2019, has been acting assistant governor and general manager of business operations since April. He has extensive public- and private-sector experience in the fields of digital and cybersecurity strategy, capability uplift and operational leadership.

The general manager – digital solutions and security is a newly created role and is part of the recently expanded senior leadership team. McDermott is responsible for developing and overseeing the effective delivery of the central bank’s digital and security functions. McDermott’s appointment was made following an external recruitment process.

RBNZ governor Adrian Orr said the organisation is fortunate to have someone of McDermott’s experience in such a critical and growing role.

“One of our strategic priorities as kaitiaki of our own organisation is to uplift our digital services and solutions. Mr McDermott will be instrumental in enabling Te Pūtea Matua to achieve operational excellence across digital and security,” Orr said.
