Allianz Commercial has appointed Emma Woolley (pictured) as president, global specialty and UK region, a newly created role that brings together oversight of the insurer's global specialty lines and its UK commercial operations under a single leader.
The appointment is subject to regulatory approval. Woolley will join the Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE board of management, reporting to Thomas Lillelund, chief executive of Allianz Commercial, and will not take up the position until her current professional commitments have concluded - no later than February 2027.
Woolley joins from Talbot Underwriting, AIG's Lloyd's specialty platform, where she currently serves as chief executive. She brings close to 30 years of experience spanning executive leadership, underwriting, compliance, governance and broking. Before Talbot she was global head of marine at AIG, and prior to that spent nearly six years at Lancashire Group - latterly as chief executive of Lancashire Syndicates, its Lloyd's platform. Earlier in her career she held leadership roles at Canopius Group, Swiss Re and BMS Group.
Pairing global specialty oversight with a single national market in one role is unusual, and the choice of market matters. The UK is one of Allianz Commercial's core commercial insurance territories globally, but it is also home to Lloyd's and the London Market - the primary international channels through which large specialty and complex risks are placed and traded across borders. Combining the two under Woolley, rather than keeping them as separate regional and product-line responsibilities, reflects where Allianz Commercial sees the overlap between its specialty growth ambitions and its existing UK footprint.
In her new role Woolley will lead global specialty lines and the UK markets in parallel, working alongside chief underwriting officer Vanessa Maxwell Neverton and chief distribution officer Jeremy Sharpe, and will collaborate with the insurer's regional presidents to expand its specialty portfolio internationally.
Thomas Lillelund said the appointment, combined with Woolley's extensive leadership and underwriting experience and deep understanding of the UK market, reinforces the company's ambition to be the most trusted commercial insurer in the market.
For brokers placing complex or internationally traded specialty risk with Allianz Commercial - marine, professional lines, financial risks, construction - this structure has a practical implication. A single leader accountable for both global specialty strategy and UK operations means that cross-border placements touching the UK book will be governed by one underwriting vision rather than negotiated between a product-line head and a regional president with potentially different priorities. That matters most on the large, complex risks where appetite signals from the top of the house shape what underwriters can and will commit to at placement.
Woolley's background is well suited to exactly that intersection. Her time running two separate Lloyd's platforms - at Lancashire Syndicates and Talbot - means she has direct experience of the kind of internationally traded specialty risk that, regardless of the geography of the underlying exposure, frequently comes to market through London.
The appointment continues a pattern of senior leadership development at Allianz Commercial since Lillelund - who joined from his role as chief executive of AIG Europe, Middle East and Africa, having previously led Aspen Re and held positions at Gen Re and Swiss Re - took the helm in early 2025.
