Julie Comer (pictured third from left) has joined the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) as head of compliance.

Now in charge of assisting BIBA members with compliance-related issues and queries, Comer will be under the supervision of regulation director David Sparkes (pictured, furthest right). Her role includes facilitating a deeper understanding of both existing and forthcoming regulations, partly through BIBA’s well-received Compliance Forums.

In discussing the appointment, Sparkes emphasized the critical nature of the position within BIBA, noting: “Members value our hands-on approach to providing support and guidance on compliance questions as well as remaining focussed on the regulatory landscape, fighting their corner as necessary.

“I am delighted that Julie, with her recent experience in a BIBA member firm, has joined us.”

Before her transition to the trade body, Comer was employed at Lloyd & Whyte, holding the position of risk & compliance director.

With a decades-long career entirely rooted in the broking sector, Comer commented: “As a broker, I really appreciated the help and support offered by BIBA. I know the burden that compliance with regulation places on brokers, and I am looking forward to working with members to help them achieve regulatory requirements efficiently.

“The BIBA team is extremely focussed on member needs, and I’m excited to now be part of it.”

BIBA chief executive Graeme Trudgill (pictured next to Vannessa Young of the compliance team) welcomed Comer, whose appointment took effect on Monday.

“When I became CEO, I promised to invest in members, and one key investment is in regulatory and compliance support,” he said. “Appointing Julie with her invaluable experience and knowledge will really benefit members. She will be a key member of our team.”
