The Employers’ Liability Tracing Office (ELTO) has found a new chair in the person of Steve Browne (pictured), AXA Insurance UK’s head of casualty, fleet, and motor trade insurance.

Browne, who has two and a half decades of experience in technical underwriting and management roles, has been with AXA for 18 years. He was part of the industry working party that helped create ELTO, which allows claimants to find their employers’ insurers.

“I would like to thank Steve Lewis, both personally and on behalf of the ELTO board for his inspirational leadership and commitment, both in his period as ELTO chair but also as a major industry figure who has campaigned over many years on all the key issues that ELTO was formed to deal with,” commented Browne, who has been a board director since ELTO was established. “Steve Lewis leaves an organisation which is thriving and delivering for the customers that the insurance industry is here to serve – by helping them to connect with an insurer in their moment of need.”

Lewis, chief executive of RSA UK & international, stepped down as ELTO chair in January.

“ELTO will continue to work tirelessly to serve those customers on behalf of the industry, while also continuing to undertake the key role of helping members comply with their regulatory obligations,” added Browne. “In this regard, ELTO remains the only regulated Employers’ Liability Tracing Office in the UK.”

A not-for-profit organisation, ELTO provides access to a central database of employers’ liability policies so claimants can pursue compensation directly with the insurance firms. ELTO’s members are both active and run-off insurers with EL policy liabilities for UK employers.
