P&C and specialty insurer IQUW has appointed Steven Tebbutt as active underwriter for Syndicate 1856, subject to regulatory approval.

In his new role, Tebbutt will report to IQUW group chief underwriter officer for insurance David Morris. He succeeds interim active underwriter David Message, who has served in that role since IQUW’s acquisition of Arcus 1856 in 2020. Message will transition into being IQUW’s energy lead underwriter.

Tebbutt joined IQUW in 2021, initially working with Chris Wilkinson to lead the firm’s specialty team and oversee the build out of the syndicate.

“Having spent the last few months helping IQUW continue its build out, developing new processes and servicing our brokers’ needs, I’m delighted to take on the role of active underwriter,” commented Tebbutt. “Peter Bilsby and David Message have recruited a first-class team of underwriters from across the industry, a team that many of our brokers value and who can effectively execute on our strategy to combine data, intelligent automation and human-expertise to make fast, informed decisions.”

“I don’t know many underwriters that are as high profile or well respected in the industry as Steve. He has been an excellent addition to our team over the last few months and I am thrilled that he will now become IQUW’s active underwriter, bringing his energy, relationships, detailed market knowledge and strategic thinking to the leadership group,” added IQUW group chief underwriting officer David Morris.

Morris also thanked Message for his work as interim active underwriter.

“David’s tenacity and focus has helped develop IQUW into a (re)insurer that is already valued by brokers and well positioned to take advantage of market conditions,” said Morris.
