Markel Group has announced the appointment of Sebastian Rice (pictured above) as senior underwriter and head of business development for Europe as part of the firm’s plans to expand its trade credit portfolio and reinforce its leadership in the excess of loss (XoL) trade credit insurance market.

Working from Markel’s London office, Rice will lead the company’s business development efforts across Europe. His responsibilities include maintaining and enhancing key global client relationships and exploring new markets to expand the trade credit business.

Additionally, Rice will focus on building and nurturing long-term relationships with brokers and educating them about the benefits of Markel’s trade credit insurance policies.

With over two decades of experience in the trade credit industry, Rice joins from QBE Europe, where he served as head of commercial underwriting for the past ten years. His previous roles at Allianz Trade and Atradius have equipped him with extensive expertise in both risk management and commercial aspects of the trade credit sector.

Rice will report to Phil Amlot, senior underwriter and head of portfolio – global – trade credit at Markel International.

“We are delighted to welcome Sebastian to the Trade Credit team,” Amlot said. “His arrival illustrates Markel’s commitment to trade credit and recruiting market-leading underwriting talent, so we can continue serving brokers in an efficient and timely manner. Sebastian’s energy and feedback from brokers in our market has always been extremely positive, so I am looking forward to seeing him apply the same energy and his personal approach at Markel, which will strengthen our position as a leading XoL trade credit insurance provider.”
