Markel Corporation has expanded the role of Mia Finsness, appointing her to the role of managing director, global casualty underwriting and claims.

Finsness will work closely with Markel executive vice-president and chief underwriting officer Robin Russo in her new role, as well as with the rest of the underwriting leadership team. Together, they will monitor current industry trends and emerging risks, provide thought leadership on casualty insurance initiatives, and support strategic underwriting initiatives across the company, a release said.

She will also lead efforts on casualty catastrophe analysis and mitigation, coordinating with Markel’s actuarial, risk management, and underwriting teams. Finsness will also lead the Markel casualty affiliated underwriting group.

Finsness is currently the leader of Markel’s casualty claims for the North American, Dublin, and London assurance divisions. She will continue to manage this claims division on top of her new duties. She will also remain based out of Markel’s Bermuda and New York offices, reporting to chief claims officer Nick Conca.

“In true Markel style, with a focus on being results-oriented and fostering teamwork, Mia has made significant strides in her current role to improve underwriting and claims processes and to provide guidance and training on systemic and emerging risks topics, strategy, and policy wordings,” commented Russo, who said that it was due to Finsness’s contributions that her role was expanded.
