Insurance brokers and insurers continue to expand their presence across UK sport, with Wentworth Alexander Insurance Brokers (WAIB) being the latest to extend a long-standing sponsorship, confirming a renewed partnership with Northamptonshire County Cricket Club.
The renewal fits a broader pattern of insurers and brokers using sport as a platform to build client relationships and brand visibility. Within cricket alone, C&C Insurance Brokers has sponsored Yorkshire County Cricket Club since 2021 and separately extended its shirt sponsorship with Lancashire Cricket by three years, while Acrisure, parent company of Nottingham-based broker Russell Scanlan, struck a naming rights and shirt sponsorship deal with Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club.
The trend extends well beyond cricket.
Howden became Principal Partner and official front-of-jersey sponsor of The British & Irish Lions in 2023 under a four-year deal, a partnership that has since expanded to cover the first Lions Women's Tour, scheduled for New Zealand in 2027. In football, health insurer Vitality is reported to be in talks to become AFC Bournemouth's front-of-shirt sponsor for the 2026-27 season, building on its existing stadium naming rights deal with the club, while specialist broker Lilley Plummer Risks upgraded its West Ham United partnership in July 2026 to become the club's official training sleeve sponsor, having first become the club's insurance partner a year earlier.
Regionally, South Yorkshire broker IFS Risk Solutions has just reaffirmed a sponsorship and insurance partnership with Club Doncaster spanning more than a decade across both rugby league and football.
WAIB is an independent commercial insurance broker headquartered in Northampton, working with clients across construction, manufacturing, retail, and wholesale and distribution. The firm said it takes time to understand each client's business in detail before recommending cover.
Alex Hammon, director at WAIB, said: “At WAIB, we are delighted and proud to continue our long standing association with Northamptonshire County Cricket, and wish them a successful season.”
As official partners, WAIB sponsored the Steelbacks' Vitality Blast fixture against Gloucestershire on Friday 29 May at the cinch County Ground. Under the renewed deal, WAIB will be hosted in the Hevey Suite throughout the 2026 season and will retain branding around the ground perimeter.
The renewal also comes at a time when independent, family-run brokers such as WAIB face mounting pressure from consolidation across the UK broking market. Private equity-backed buyers have driven the bulk of broker M&A activity in the UK and Europe in recent years, and industry valuations have generally trended higher for agencies sold to external consolidators than for those transferred through internal succession.
Against that backdrop, sustained local sponsorships of the kind WAIB has built with Northamptonshire, and that regional brokers such as IFS Risk Solutions have built with Club Doncaster, can serve as a visible marker of independence and community rootedness, helping smaller brokers differentiate themselves from nationally scaled consolidators and global broking groups competing for the same corporate sponsorship platforms.
The partnership continues through an active campaign for Northamptonshire.
The Steelbacks have made a strong start to the 2026 Vitality Blast, topping the Central and West Group table, with home fixtures at the cinch County Ground continuing to provide WAIB with matchday exposure to supporters and the local business community throughout the summer.
