The wildfires tearing through south-west France have crossed into territory European fire services have barely dealt with before: blazes intense enough to generate their own thunderstorms. French authorities have recorded at least two of these so-called pyrocumulonimbus events during the current Gironde fires, with one throwing off lightning strikes that ignited a fresh wildfire north of Bordeaux, according to reporting in the Financial Times.

The phenomenon occurs when a fire burns hot enough to force smoke and moisture kilometres into the atmosphere, where it condenses into its own storm cloud. These storms can produce winds above 100mph and updrafts strong enough, as seen in Australia's 2019-20 "Black Summer" fires, to hurl embers across rivers, motorways and firebreaks that would otherwise have held. Francesca Di Giuseppe of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts said the storms can reach altitudes similar to a moderate volcanic eruption.

Sophie Brocas, the regional prefect for Gironde, described the events as unprecedented for France, saying local firefighters had never dealt with anything on that scale. The fires have already burned through some 42,000 hectares in Gironde alone, an area roughly four times the size of Paris, and forced the evacuation of more than 220,000 people. Balz Grollimund, Swiss Re's head of catastrophe perils, told the Financial Times the Gironde fires alone were likely to cost insurers "at least hundreds of millions of euros," with a full estimate still weeks away.

Why the "self-sustaining" fire matters for underwriters

For insurers, the significance isn't just the scale of the burn, it's the mechanism. A fire that generates its own weather stops behaving like the wildfire risk most European catastrophe models were built around. Laurent Nuñez, France's interior minister, described the Gironde fire as "autonomous, self-sustaining, and spreads in all directions," according to the Times. That kind of behaviour, jumping firebreaks and rivers via lightning and long-range embers, is exactly the failure mode that undermines standard containment assumptions baked into exposure modelling.

Europe's wildfire models have historically been built on more predictable spread patterns than the ones now showing up in France and Spain. Insurance Business has previously reported that Europe's wildfire modules were "once peripheral in underwriting packs" and must now contend with longer fire seasons and topographies unlike the Californian wildland-urban interface many vendor models were built on. Fire-generated storms push that gap further: a blaze that creates its own ignition sources ahead of the main front breaks the geographic containment assumptions that underpin most peril modelling and reinsurance event definitions.

It also adds to a wider pattern insurers are already tracking. Swiss Re's latest sigma report found wildfire the fastest-growing catastrophe peril globally, with insured losses rising an estimated 12% a year, even as Europe has yet to produce a single billion-dollar wildfire loss. Gironde, an economic hub for France's aerospace and defence sectors, with ArianeGroup, Safran and Dassault Aviation all forced to shut or partially evacuate sites, may test how long that holds.

Temperatures are forecast to climb back toward 40C in the region this week, and officials have warned the fires are far from contained.
