AXA XL has promoted David Hughes to head of hull for the UK & Lloyd’s market, effective July 01.

In his new role, Hughes is in charge of AXA XL’s hull business in the UK and in the Lloyd’s marketplace, and is tasked with achieving strategic and profitable development of the book of business, a statement from the insurer said.

Hughes has been in the insurance industry for 25 years, and was most recently senior class underwriter at AXA XL. He began his career at Sedgwick (now Marsh Ltd) in 1996. He joined AXA XL (then Catlin) as an assistant underwriter in 2003.

In 2006, Hughes moved to Hong Kong to help set up the company’s new operations in the territory, before moving to Singapore in 2009 as regional product group leader and head of marine, Asia-Pacific.

In 2013, Hughes returned to London to take up the role of senior class underwriter – hull and war, a role that was expanded to include marine portfolio manager in 2015.

“I’m delighted that David will be taking on responsibility for our London-based hull business,” said Sundeep Khera, AXA XL’s head of marine, UK & Lloyd’s market and global head of hull. “David has been with AXA XL since 2003, working in London, Hong Kong and Singapore, which has enabled him to hone his expertise and build up a strong reputation within the global marine insurance market.

“David has been a valued member of the senior marine management team for several years. He has shown great leadership skills in his former roles and has exactly the right experience to steer the strategy of our hull business in the UK & Lloyd’s region and support our clients in managing the risks they face today and in the future.”
