AAMI’s annual crash index has revealed this year’s most dangerous roads in Australia.

The insurer’s data, covering Aug. 1 last year to July 31, found the most crashes in Australia occurred on Plenty Road in Bundoora, in Melbourne’s north.

Plenty Road “is a busy stretch of road with multiple lanes of traffic travelling in both directions,” said Ashleigh Paterson, AAMI spokeswoman, in a news.com.au report. "It's a key thoroughfare for commuters in and out of the CBD, it has a number of entry and exit points. That, in addition to having a tram line running through the middle, makes it a busy and congested stretch of road."

The data also showed that Gympie Road in Chermside, in Brisbane, was named Queensland’s worst road, Hume Highway in Sydney's west was the riskiest in New South Wales, The Parade in Norwood was Adelaide’s most dreaded spot, and Albany Highway at Cannington was Perth’s most deadly road.

"When we analysed the data, there were a number of commonalities between the roads," Paterson said. "This includes congestion during peak hours, multiple lanes, and traffic travelling in both directions and entry and exit points.”

The crash index also found that driver distractions continue to be a leading cause of accidents in Australian roads, news.com.au reported.
