Community Underwriting, backed by Berkley Insurance Australia and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company, has concluded its fourth Small Grants Program, assisting 24 projects across the sector.

Under its business model, Community Underwriting allocates 5% of its annual surplus and reinvests it in the community through the grants program. Its insurance partners, Berkley and Mitsui Sumitomo, also contribute insurance dollars to enable the underwriter to support more charitable projects.

The 2017 grants program supported the following causes:
  • raising awareness and education for neuro‐rehabilitation, arthritis, and other musculoskeletal conditions;
  • a book to give hope to women victims of domestic abuse; 
  • a property purchased for the rescue and care of sick and needy donkeys;
  • engaging aboriginal youth with their culture through film;
  • a hoist to allow children with a disability to participate in aquatic education;
  • providing free medically related transport service to people in the community who are alone;
  • an outdoor projector and screen to deliver education and recreation programs for people with disability;
  • building a state-of-the-art home-style facility for people with disabilities in Kandos and  Rylstone; 
  • developing a pocket guide containing information on heart attack symptoms and what to do in an emergency;
  • education sessions for flight nurses to share knowledge, skills, and expertise; and
  • providing cold bottles of water daily to elderly clients in their homes throughout the hotter months.
