Insurance-focused law firm DLA Piper has announced the appointment of Tony Rutherford as a partner in its Melbourne finance, projects and restructuring (FP&R) practice.

Rutherford is returning to the law firm, having worked as a DLA Piper senior associate in its Dubai, Perth and Melbourne offices from 2008 to 2013. Most recently, he was a construction, infrastructure and projects partner at Holding Redlich.

"I’m looking forward to returning to DLA Piper as a partner," Rutherford said. "They are committed to the construction and infrastructure sector, particularly in the ESG space, and I know first-hand of their dynamic culture and forward-thinking approach to client relationships."

Rutherford’s expertise includes advising on large and complex infrastructure transactions across various sectors.

His experience was hailed as “invaluable” by Amber Matthews, Australia managing partner at DLA Piper, with the insurance law firm looking to build out its country-wide projects and construction capabilities at a time that the government has backed improvements.

"Tony’s deep expertise in social infrastructure is particularly relevant given the state and federal government’s multi-billion-dollar commitment to improving housing, health care, and education facilities and access,” Matthews said. “This level of investment will also require private capital for investment from super funds and private equity houses, and with Tony on board, we will be well placed to support a wide range of industry participants."

DLA Piper views Tony's appointment as a testament to their positive culture and the appeal of a global firm, Matthews said.

Another returner, energy specialist Jack Brumpton, joined the insurance law firm’s FP&R practice in March, swapping Sun Cable for his former employer. At the time, DLA Piper APAC head of energy Stephen Webb celebrated Brumpton’s appointment as a “win for the firm”.

In February, DLA Piper welcomed the Hon. John Middleton AM KC, who served as a Justice of the Federal Court of Australia for 16 years, to its team as a senior advisor.
