Queensland-based car insurer RACQ is running its first round of grant applications for 2023 for Queensland clubs and community groups that need financial support after a natural disaster.

The grants, available from the RACQ Foundation, range from $1,000 to $50,000. However, funding up to $100,000 may be considered in exceptional circumstances.

“This money is available to sporting clubs, community organisations, and charities at the heart of our Queensland communities. It's because of our members, we're able to make a difference,” said RACQ Foundation senior coordinator Bridgette Muller.

In 2022, RACQ Foundation approved 109 grants totalling over $3.1 million, with most of the funds given to clubs and organisations in southeast Queensland areas affected by flooding early in the year – known as Australia's costliest flood and one of the seven global events (excluding the US) that generated insurance losses that exceeded US$1 billion.

“RACQ Foundation approved grants to 82 beneficiaries worth more than $2.4 million specifically in response to the southeast Queensland floods,” Muller said. “Many of the clubs and organisations we support are led by volunteers who themselves have been impacted by natural disasters.”

During the same year, the foundation's volunteers visited Quilpie, Thargomindah, Yarrabah, Texas, and Goondiwindi.

“[2022] was our busiest year for both grant approvals and the on-the-ground support through our volunteer programs,” Muller said. “We proudly represent RACQ members by being a force for good helping regional Queensland communities in need. We have given a hand to graziers and farmers, local clubs and organisations, and spent money locally to support local small businesses and economies.”

The first round remains open until February 6.
