The Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) is stressing the importance of prioritising safety for active transport users this summer, as there's a noticeable uptick in cycling and e-scooter activities during the festive season.

Last summer, RACV's arevo app – which aids bicycle and e-scooter users in planning routes, customisable based on the user's expertise – observed a 33% surge in planned bike trips over summer compared to winter, accompanied by a 39% increase in call-out rates for RACV Bike Assist.

Considering the influx of tourists and heightened pedestrian activity in Melbourne, RACV general manager mobility Julia Hunter emphasised the need for added caution to ensure a secure summer for all road and bike-lane users.

“This is a great time for active transport users who are enjoying the great outdoor conditions, but it's also a time of heightened risk,” she said. “There will be more tourists unfamiliar with our roads and rules, more Victorians riding bikes and e-scooters for the first time and more pedestrians and families exploring our city on foot.”

How to stay safe in the summer

RACV advised motorists and active transport users to exercise patience, adhere to pertinent road rules, and plan ahead for a secure journey.

“Bike riders will be able to take to the road in greater confidence with RACV Bike Assist, which works like emergency assistance for bike riders. For just $47 per year, RACV Bike Assist will help you ride with confidence,” Hunter said.

RACV also urged e-scooter riders to acquaint themselves with e-scooter laws, given the escalating adoption of this active transport mode. Additionally, e-scooter users were reminded to be conscientious about where they leave their scooters, as they may pose trip hazards if left on pavements.

Rise of e-scooter users

As per the latest Cycling and E-Scooter Economy Report, with RACV as a program partner, 19% of Victorians engaged with e-scooters in 2022.

“Many Victorians will be using e-scooters for the first time this summer, whether they have purchased themselves or received them as gifts,” Hunter said. “RACV is encouraging all e-scooter users to familiarise themselves with the laws for their safe use – removing confusion on what is and isn't allowed can also help keep you and others safe.”

RACV has taken a proactive stance on e-scooter safety, producing an explanatory video outlining the regulations of the e-scooter trial in Melbourne, Yarra, Port Philip, and the regional City of Ballarat.
