RAA Insurance is urging drivers to avoid becoming victims of car crimes, as it revealed the top spots in South Australia (SA) for thefts and break-ins.

According to figures obtained by the SA insurer, more than 30 motor vehicles are stolen or broken into each day across the state, with Adelaide CBD and Murray Bridge posting the highest number of car crimes in suburban and regional areas, respectively.

“Having your car stolen is a major inconvenience and, if you’re not insured, a serious financial setback,’’ said Hayley Cain, RAA Insurance claims manager. “Finding your car with a broken window and items stolen from inside can also be an upsetting experience and a significant blow to the wallet. That’s why we encourage all motorists to take precautions to reduce their chance of having their car stolen or broken into.’’

Police figures show that 3,162 motor vehicles were reported stolen/used illegally and a further 8,435 were broken into during the 12 months to September 2017 across the state – figures consistent with the annual average reported to police during the past three financial years, Cain said.

Also making it to the top five suburban hotspots for the combined car crimes during the period were Morphett Vale, Mawson Lakes, Parafield Gardens, and Paralowie; while Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Lincoln, and Mount Gambier completed the top five regional locations for these crimes.

RAA Insurance said the following measures will reduce the risk of car thefts and break-ins:

  • Park in a garage or carport whenever possible.

  • If you must park on the road, leave your car in a well-lit area.

  • Install sensor lights in your driveway, as they’re an excellent deterrent.

  • Always lock your vehicle, even if you’re only leaving it for a couple of minutes.

  • Remove items of value from sight, and use your car alarm if you have one.

  • If you don’t have a car alarm, a steering wheel lock can be an effective deterrent.

  • Don’t put all your valuables in the boot, as most trunks are easily accessible.

  • Make sure your vehicle is insured against theft.
