Insurer RACQ has revealed the 10 most deadly intersections for serious crashes in Queensland – six of which were found in the greater Brisbane area.

According to the crash frequency data analysed by RACQ, there were more than 43 collisions at the worst intersection hotspots in the region, resulting in 63 casualties, between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2017.

Rebecca Michael, RACQ head of public policy, said the intersection of Greenbank Road and Mount Lindesay Highway at North Maclean was not only the worst spot in greater Brisbane, but also ranked number one across the entire state.

“This is an unsignalised T-intersection on a busy, high-speed road, and drivers are not giving way correctly,” Michael said. “We’re relieved to see works have started to add signals to the intersection and put in a new service road, and this will go a long way to reducing the number of serious crashes.”

Also making it to the top ten deadly intersections were the following:

  • Clifford St and Gold Coast Hwy/ Remembrance Dr, Surfers Paradise
  • Tennyson St and Victoria St, Mackay
  • Beerburrum Rd and Pumicestone Rd, Caboolture
  • Newnham Rd and Wecker Rd, Mount Gravatt East
  • Gympie Arterial Rd and Webster Rd, Aspley
  • Brunswick St and McLachlan St, Fortitude Valley
  • Gipps Street St and Wickham St, Fortitude Valley
  • Scottsdale Dr and Stapley Dr/ Bayswater Ave, Varsity Lakes
  • Pacific Hwy, On Ramp / Movieworld Access Rd, Oxenford

Michael urged all levels of government to look into why these crashes occurred frequently, and said funding should be allocated to make the intersections safer.

“We need our politicians to come to the table here – our federal, state, and local representatives need to step up their game,” she said. “While the Blackspot Program has been successful in reducing the number of serious crashes in troublesome intersections, continued investment is needed if we’re to get safer roads and safer outcomes for greater Brisbane drivers.”

Michael also reminded motorists that it is their responsibility to enter the intersections safely.

“Crashes like these can be avoided by taking your time, giving way correctly, following a safe distance, and obeying traffic signals and signs.”
