The Star to take insurer to court over business interruption coverage

The Star Entertainment Group – which owns and operates The Star Sydney, The Star Gold Coast, and Treasury Brisbane – has decided to go down the legal route after its business interruption (BI) insurance claim hit a snag.

Lodged in April, the BI claim is said to have been disputed by the company’s unnamed insurer. According to a report by The Australian, the ASX 100 listed casino owner will be seeking declaratory relief via a court case.

The publication quoted The Star managing director and chief executive Matt Bekier as stating: “The insurer has a different read to us, so it is going to court.

“We are claiming business interruption cover, and given that we were forced to close as a result of the government, we think our policy will protect us.”

On August 20, the group reported a $94.6 million net loss after tax for the year ended June 30.
