With Manori Volcano on Ambae Island raising fears of a major eruption, New Zealanders travelling to or from Vanuatu are advised to register with SafeTravel to arm themselves with the right information.

Brokers, at the same time, will need to inform customers why they should take out travel insurance – especially in the event of natural disaster threating to erupt.

If a flight is disrupted, SafeTravel said, travellers should ensure they keep all receipts to support their travel insurance claim.

House of Travel commercial director Brent Thomas told Fairfax Media that travellers who took out travel insurance before the volcanic threat became a “known event” would be covered for disruptions it causes. Others would have to wear the costs themselves, he said.

The slew of natural disasters recently offered a reminder that insurance should be bought at the time of booking, Flight Centre NZ general manager for retail Sue Matson said.

“There have been a number of events worldwide recently, such as earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes, which highlight the importance of travel insurance and so we recommend anyone soon to travel overseas to make sure they have sufficient cover for their trip,” she told Fairfax.
