Autonomous vehicle software provider Oxbotica has safely completed what is said to be the first zero-occupancy self-driving vehicle journey on an open road in Europe – an undertaking that would not have been accomplished without the appropriate insurance cover.

“The world is on the cusp of a once-in-a-lifetime world-changing technology revolution, and Apollo through its ibott business, in partnership in the UK with Aioi Nissay Dowa Europe as insurer, is thrilled to have taken the first step with Oxbotica in ensuring universal autonomy reaches its full potential, enabled by innovative, comprehensive, and flexible insurance solutions,” said ibott underwriter Rebecca Marsden (pictured).

Established by Apollo Syndicate Management, managing general agent ibott specialises in insurance solutions for the digital economy and world of emerging mobility. The Oxbotica project in Oxford, which features an all-electric Applied EV vehicle with no onboard driver, was covered by the insurance programme created by ibott.

Arranged by Marsh, the insurance solution was described as a landmark placement.

“Insurance is fundamental to the advancement of Oxbotica’s trials,” commented Marsh’s Sam Tiltman, sharing economy and mobility leader, UK & Ireland. “This latest exciting development signals growing market confidence in how AVs (autonomous vehicles) will revolutionise UK transport infrastructure.”

Meanwhile, it was noted that Oxbotica will now accelerate the commercial deployment of autonomous vehicles globally.
