Right now, growers across south-west France are doing something that has nothing to do with weather forecasts or firebreaks: waiting on a lab. Grapes from vineyards near this summer's fires are being sent off for chemical testing to see whether smoke has worked its way into the fruit before harvest gets under way in the coming weeks. Nobody will know for certain until fermentation is well underway - by which point the crop is already picked, pressed, and hard to reverse.
For the wine trade, that uncertainty is a commercial headache. For insurers, brokers and reinsurers with exposure to French and Spanish agriculture, hospitality and business interruption books, it's arguably a bigger problem, because it sits in a coverage grey area that most European property and crop wording was never written to handle.
The numbers behind this summer's fires are large by any recent standard. Wildfires burned more than 900 square kilometres in Spain and roughly 1,160 square kilometres in France during July, pushing both countries into record or near-record territory for the season. The Gironde fire near Bordeaux alone forced the evacuation of roughly 253,000 people and destroyed around 240 homes - and produced one of the clearest examples yet of a business-interruption blind spot, with more than 13,000 businesses evacuated from the area yet left with zero physical damage to claim against.
Most of the burnt area was in rural land with limited insurance penetration, and the vineyards themselves largely escaped direct fire damage. The exposure that's left behind isn't structural - it's airborne. Smoke drifted for days across some of Bordeaux's most valuable appellations during véraison, the point in the growing season when grapes begin to ripen and their skins become most receptive to absorbing outside compounds.
Smoke taint isn't a marketing worry, it's a measurable chemical process. When wildfire smoke settles on a ripening grape, volatile phenol compounds bind to sugars in the skin to form glycosides - essentially locking themselves into the fruit rather than washing off in the rain. According to guidance published by the Australian Wine Research Institute, those glycosides are largely undetectable by taste at the point of harvest and only convert into the free compounds that produce ashy, medicinal or "burnt rubber" flavours during fermentation and, in some cases, months later in the bottle.
That lag matters enormously for claims handling. It means a winery, its insurer and any loss adjuster involved could be arguing about causation and timing of loss long after the grapes have left the vineyard - a dispute flagged by coverage specialists writing on winery insurance in the US market, where insurers and policyholders frequently disagree over whether tainting occurred on the vine, during transport, or in short-term storage before pressing. Red wines are generally considered more vulnerable than whites, because red winemaking involves prolonged contact between the juice and the skins during fermentation, extracting more of the trapped compounds; white wines, pressed and separated from their skins more quickly, tend to pick up less.
This is where the coverage gap opens up. Wildfire risk sits outside the state-backed CatNat natural catastrophe scheme in France, and outside the equivalent Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros framework in Spain - in both markets, fire is treated as a standard insurable peril under ordinary property and agricultural cover rather than a declared catastrophe, a distinction that shapes which policy actually has to respond and on what terms, according to a legal analysis of the French and Spanish wildfire exposure published by law firm Kennedys. Direct flame damage to buildings or vines is relatively straightforward to adjust. Losses caused by smoke, soot or contamination without physical destruction are not - the same difficulty that has already surfaced around business interruption claims from evacuated businesses elsewhere in the fire zone that suffered zero physical damage.
France's crop-insurance safety net, the subsidised assurance récolte multirisque climatique that replaced the old agricultural calamities regime in 2023, is built primarily around measurable yield loss from perils such as drought, frost, hail and flooding, with payouts triggered once losses cross a set threshold. Smoke taint doesn't reduce yield in the way hail or frost does - the grapes can look, weigh and ripen perfectly normally and still be commercially worthless once fermented. Whether that kind of quality-only loss is picked up cleanly by existing multirisque climatique wording, or whether growers are left relying on a rejection letter from a winery and a goodwill negotiation, is exactly the sort of question brokers with vineyard clients should be putting to insurers now, rather than after harvest.
The most useful comparison for anyone underwriting or broking this risk sits on the other side of the Atlantic. California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho have spent the past six wildfire seasons refining exactly this problem into an insurable one. In 2020 alone, an estimated $601 million of Californian wine grapes went unharvested because of smoke exposure concerns, with the US Department of Agriculture's Risk Management Agency paying out roughly $227 million in associated crop insurance claims, according to figures compiled in an industry analysis published in Choices Magazine.
That experience has pushed US regulators to build a purpose-made response. From the 2026 crop year, the USDA's Risk Management Agency has expanded its Fire Insurance Protection–Smoke Index (FIP-SI) endorsement to grape growers in California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. The endorsement pays out against a defined number of "smoke events" in an insured county - measured using NOAA satellite smoke-density data rather than a lab test on individual fruit - and covers part of the policy deductible once that threshold is crossed. It's an index-based trigger, similar in concept to parametric covers used elsewhere in property catastrophe reinsurance, and it sidesteps the causation argument almost entirely by paying on an objective external measure rather than a disputed chemical result.
Nothing resembling that index exists yet in France or Spain. Given how directly comparable the underlying risk is - overlapping wildfire and harvest seasons, valuable fruit, disputed chemistry - European insurers and their reinsurance partners have a genuine template to work from rather than a blank page.

It's the same logic underpinning parametric cat-bond and reinsurance structures elsewhere in the market - pay on a measurable external index rather than a disputed loss assessment. Nothing equivalent currently exists for French or Spanish vineyards.
Insurance Business's readers in London are not just watching this from the sidelines. The UK is one of the world's largest hubs for fine wine trading, en primeur purchasing and wine investment, and a meaningful share of Bordeaux's top châteaux sell futures into British merchants and collectors months before the finished wine exists. That creates exposure well beyond French farms:
The physical fires may be largely out. Whether this year's Bordeaux is drinkable won't be known until well into the autumn - and whether the policies written to cover it actually respond may take even longer to establish.
