Canopius Group, a global specialty (re)insurer, has made a strategic move by launching its aviation reinsurance business and appointing Andrew Hartley (pictured) as the head of aviation treaty in London.

Hartley has more than four decades of industry experience. He previously served as the head of aviation at Axis Capital and spent 17 years as the divisional director for aviation at Novae Group.

Additionally, Hartley has held positions at Kingsmead Underwriting Agency, Nicholson Chamberlain Colls, and CT Bowring & Co.

Canopius Group's new aviation reinsurance division will initially focus on writing non-proportional aviation reinsurance but aims to establish itself as a leading market swiftly.

This strategic move aligns with the company's commitment to expanding its offerings and bringing additional capacity and expertise to the aviation reinsurance market, which has faced challenges in recent years.

Alois Rouffiac, the UK chief underwriting officer and active underwriter, expressed confidence in Hartley's leadership, emphasizing his recognition and accomplishments in the aviation reinsurance sector. Rouffiac said that Hartley's extensive experience made him the ideal candidate to spearhead the launch of Canopius Group's aviation treaty class, which will complement its existing reinsurance portfolio.

In response to his appointment, Hartley expressed his enthusiasm about joining the Canopius Group. He also expressed his confidence in Canopius Group's long-term commitment to building a successful aviation business.
