Investment and insurance company Standard Life has strengthened its board with the appointment of John Devine as new non-executive director.

Devine joined the Standard Life board on July 4 as he was also appointed as a member of the remuneration committee and the risk and capital committee.

“I am delighted that John has agreed to join our Board,” said Standard Life chairman Gerry Grimstone.

“His experience and background in operations and technology as well as his board experience make him an ideal addition as we continue to build a world-class investment company,” he added.

Following Devine’s appointment, the Standard Life board will now include four executive directors, seven non-executive directors and the chairman.

Devine holds 1,321 shares in Standard Life. He has been a director of the insurer’s investment arm since September 2012 and has served as its chairman since April 2015.

Apart from his new role at Standard Life, Devine also currently holds non-executive posts at GE Capital, Euroclear and Citco.

He previously served as chief operating officer at Threadneedle Asset Management and as senior vice president and head of global operations and technology at Merrill Lynch in London.
