AXA XL makes senior appointment to construction team

AXA XL Insurance has announced its appointment of Adrian Burgess (pictured) to the role of senior underwriter, construction, UK & Lloyd’s, effective immediately.

In his new position, Burgess will be tasked with developing and managing underwriting strategies for both renewal and new business within AXA XL’s construction book of business in the UK. In addition, he will work closely alongside AXA XL’s team of risk engineers to support clients as they navigate the challenges and opportunities currently in the market.

Commenting on the appointment, Al Baker, head of construction, UK & Lloyd's, at AXA XL said: "There's huge opportunity for the UK construction sector as it recovers from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and advances towards a more sustainable future. But while there’s an increase in the volume of building projects, the industry faces challenges from supply chain issues and high prices of building materials.”

Baker noted that having the right talent in place is key as AXA XL looks to support its clients in addressing these challenges and to profitably grow its UK construction business. He added that he is very happy to welcome Burgess to the team, and that with over three decades of experience in engineering and construction underwriting, Burgess is an “ideal candidate” to further strengthen AXA XL’s team and support its clients.

Burgess began his career at Eagle Star/Zurich Insurance in 1988, where he held a variety of underwriting positions. Between 1999 and 2021, he spent time with firms including Allianz Cornhill, Royal & Sun Alliance and MS Amlin, before joining Ensurance UK, where he most recently held the position of senior underwriter.
