The most innovative professionals and teams in the NSW workers' compensation industry have been recognised at icare's third annual Care and Service Excellence (CASE) Awards held in Sydney this week.

Margaret Lichaa of Allianz Australia workers' compensation NSW scooped the Young Care and Service Professional of the Year Award. Recognised for their outstanding care and service were joint winners Shaun Lane of RehabCo and Allianz's Eloise Stedman for care and support; and Lhing Vaipe of QBE for specialist care services.

EML bagged two awards – the Outstanding Care and Support by a Team Award for its Recovering Independence Services (RIS); and the Excellence and Innovation in Injury Management Award for the TMF team's proactive and early intervention approach to PTSD, developed in partnership with Fire & Rescue NSW.

“The work our people do to help our customers can be challenging at times, so it’s both humbling and exciting to have that care and effort recognised,” said Gerard McDermott, group executive for workers' compensation at EML.

Joint winners for Excellence in Improving Employer Performance were Altius Group and Aon Risk Solutions. Aon assisted Coca Cola Amatil to raise awareness and understanding of mental health; while Altius teamed up with a construction company to improve work practices to reduce the risk of injury.

Leo Demer of JLT Australia and New Zealand was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award for transforming the workers compensation industry in Australia over the past 30 years.

“Over the last 30 years, Leo has made significant contributions to the workers' compensation industry, improving outcomes for local government where one in three workers were injured, to only one in 20 today – delivering on average 30% in premium savings to councils,” said Nick Harris, deputy CEO at JLT.

Demer also played a critical role in creating the first-ever fully integrated national 'whole people risk' offering to the market.

The Customer Service Award, meanwhile, was given to IOH Injury and Occupational Health for its all-around commitment to icare customers.

John Nagle, group executive for icare workers' insurance, said this year's entrants were all outstanding.

“The ingenuity and innovation evident in the work being done to improve outcomes for businesses and injured workers are true examples of excellence and something we should all as an industry aspire to,” he said.
