RAC taps wider market with product relaunch

Breakdown cover provider the RAC wants more British drivers to benefit from its motor legal expenses insurance product.

Relaunching its standalone offering, the insurer is giving non-members access to RAC Legal Care Plus through an online sales platform. At £15 annually, the policy features a round-the-clock free legal advice helpline.

RAC Legal Care Plus covers loss of earnings, policy excesses, and the cost of making a personal injury compensation claim following non-fault accidents. It also provides protection not only for the vehicle but for the policyholder as well, meaning the individual is covered regardless of which car is driven.

In addition, the product is useful in cases where policyholders face prosecution for a motoring offence they want to contest. RAC Legal Care Plus also covers legal expenses for disputes arising from a car sale or purchase, as well as issues involving poor garage servicing or repair work.

“We believe RAC Legal Care Plus could be of great benefit to many more motorists than it currently is, as it has two very valuable features: 24/7 access to a free legal advice helpline, and cover for the individual rather than just the vehicle being driven,” said RAC legal services general manager Paul Evans. “This is why we have taken the decision to make it available to all motorists at a great price via the web.

“At just £15 a year, it is a compelling and valuable product, particularly as RAC research of more than 2,000 motorists found that only one in five thought legal expenses insurance was available for £15 or less compared to the vast majority (79%) who believed it cost £20 or more. In reality the typical cost of a motor legal expenses policy is around £30.”

The standalone policy, whose marketing was previously focused on the RAC’s more than eight million members, extends to Europe as well.

Evans added: “There is, however, work to be done to let motorists know they can buy motor legal expenses insurance directly as a standalone product, as our research found that most tend to think it is only really sold as an add-on to car insurance policies.”
