Professionalism, expertise, and trust are the pillars upon which successful MGAs build their reputations. The attainment of Chartered MGA status represents the pinnacle of these values. It is not just a badge of honour but a powerful statement of commitment to excellence, accountability, and consumer trust.

A symbol of technical competence

At the MGAA, we recognise that MGAs play a crucial role in the insurance value chain. However, unlike insurers and brokers, MGAs historically lacked a dedicated professional designation. In collaboration with our valued affiliate member, the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), we developed a Chartered designation specifically for MGAs and the professionals working within them. This initiative ensures that those operating in the sector can attain a widely respected title that acknowledges their technical expertise and dedication to best practices.

In 2024 alone, 1,580 professionals completed our MGA Assess web-based learning system, underscoring the industry's commitment to continuous professional development. This commitment is vital in ensuring that MGAs remain at the forefront of underwriting expertise, regulatory compliance, and customer-focused service. Chartered status formalises this dedication, signalling to clients and partners that an MGA operates at the highest level of professional and ethical standards.

A public commitment to professional standards

Encouraging MGAs to pursue Chartered status is about more than individual or corporate recognition; it is about raising the bar for the entire sector. Chartered firms share a common dedication, making meaningful contributions to both the profession and the broader community. The more MGAs that commit to professional qualifications and publicise their Chartered credentials, the greater the sector’s overall reputation for excellence. This, in turn, fosters increased confidence from insurers, brokers, and clients alike.

For firms, the benefits of achieving Chartered MGA status are substantial. It demonstrates a clear commitment to staff development, regulatory compliance, and ethical business practices. Chartered MGAs enjoy enhanced credibility, making them more attractive to insurer partners and brokers seeking reliable and professional underwriting expertise. Furthermore, it enhances talent acquisition and retention -top professionals want to work for organisations that invest in their people and uphold industry-leading standards.

The Chartered ethos: elevating the industry

Achieving Chartered status is not just about gaining a title - it is about embracing a philosophy of continuous improvement, ethical business practices, and putting customers first - ultimately underscoring the vital role that MGAs play in financial security and resilience. It also reinforces the need for trusted, technically proficient professionals who can provide appropriate financial planning and insurance solutions.

individual recognition: joining the elite

For individuals, Chartered status is a career-defining achievement. It places professionals among the top tier of their field and provides a host of benefits, including:

  • Differentiation – Standing out as a leader in the MGA profession.
  • Specialised Knowledge – Attaining CII Level 6 qualifications to deepen technical expertise.
  • Acknowledged Professionalism – Being recognised by clients and peers as a reliable and skilled expert.

Chartered status is widely recognised by clients as a hallmark of reliability and expertise. It instils confidence, assuring policyholders and partners that they are dealing with a business committed to professionalism and consumer-centric service.

The Chartered MGA designation represents a significant milestone in the professionalisation of the MGA sector. It validates the critical role MGAs play in the insurance industry and elevates the profession’s standing among financial services. By striving for Chartered status, MGAs not only enhance their businesses but also contribute to the broader goal of strengthening consumer trust and industry credibility.

The MGAA remains committed to supporting our members on this journey. We encourage all MGAs to consider the value of Chartered status - because when professionalism thrives, the entire sector benefits.
