Pacific Life Re has appointed a former AIG senior executive as the new managing director of its Europe business unit.

In the newly created role, Darren Spriggs will be responsible for the leadership and strategic direction of Pacific Life Re Europe as the company continues to expand globally.

The insurer said Spriggs’ appointment will ensure that it will maintain its position in the UK and Ireland market across both protection and longevity reinsurance.

“These are exciting times for Pacific Life Re and we are committed to building on our high-calibre team so that we continue to deliver outstanding support to clients as we grow,” said Pacific Life Re CEO Dave Howell.

“Darren has a wealth of knowledge and experience at a senior level and is a great addition to the business.”

Spriggs moves to Pacific Life Re amid the insurer’s ongoing global expansion, which has seen the launch of a new business unit in Australia and the creation of a branch in South Korea.

"I'm delighted to be joining such a successful and innovative business at this pivotal moment in its growth and development, and aim to put my previous experience as a broker and then as an insurer to good effect,” Spriggs said.

“I look forward to working with the Europe team to build on the excellent track record they already have in this key market,” he added.

Before joining Pacific Life Re, Spriggs recently served as managing director of AIG Life, which is formerly the leading UK protection provider Ageas Protect. He led the business over several years, culminating in the sale of the company to AIG in 2015.
