Allianz UK refreshes Wholesale & Retail cover for mid-market clients

Allianz UK is refreshing its Commercial Select industry offerings, starting with Wholesale & Retail, targeting businesses with turnover between £10 million and £1.5 billion.

The improved products introduce more tailored cover and practical support intended to reflect the changing risks facing UK businesses, including increased standard product limits designed to give brokers a stronger starting point for discussing individual client needs.

The refresh is aimed at how wholesale and retail businesses actually operate today, as their operations become more complex and increasingly connected through supplier networks, international trading relationships and supply chain dependencies. Allianz cited its own SME and mid-market research finding that 68% of UK business leaders see their business as vulnerable to supply chain disruption, reinforcing the case for cover and risk management support that reflects those operational realities.

Part of a pattern Allianz has tracked for years

That concern is consistent with Allianz's own broader risk research over recent cycles.

The Allianz Risk Barometer 2026, drawing on nearly 3,340 risk professionals across almost 100 countries, found business interruption and supply chain disruption remained a top-three global business risk, having ranked first or second in every edition of the survey for the past decade, even as just 3% of respondents described their supply chains as "very resilient."

Separately, Allianz Research has estimated that a global supply chain disruption on the scale of the war in Ukraine could generate cumulative GDP losses of $1.5 trillion over two years, while 51% of respondents globally, and 46% in the UK specifically, identified a geopolitically triggered global supply chain paralysis as the most plausible "Black Swan" scenario facing their business over the next five years.

Rob Carslake, head of London mid-market at Allianz UK, said wholesale and retail businesses are continuing to grow and their operations are becoming more complex, from wider supplier networks to international trading relationships and increasing supply chain dependencies. He said the enhancements reflect those realities, with increased standard product limits designed to give brokers a stronger foundation for discussing each business's individual needs, and that combined with Allianz's technical underwriting expertise and risk management support, the aim is to help customers build resilience, manage emerging risks and pursue growth with greater confidence.

The first of several sector updates

Allianz confirmed the Wholesale & Retail refresh is the first in a series planned through the second half of 2026, with further sector propositions to follow.

The move continues Allianz Commercial's broader commercial product replatforming programme, which UK markets director Graham Stait has said continues to launch products across both its e-trade and UK market platforms, with the overall replatforming timeline adjusted as the rollout has progressed.

Alongside the product refresh, Allianz UK is placing greater emphasis on industry specialisms, sector knowledge and technical expertise within its mid-market strategy, with regional trading teams, product specialists and sector experts focused on helping brokers access local insight, technical underwriting support, risk management expertise and established claims capability through what the insurer describes as a more joined-up Allianz Commercial model.

Graham Stait, director of UK markets at Allianz UK, said the refresh is an important step in strengthening the mid-market offering, but also reflects the broader way Allianz is bringing together local trading relationships, deeper sector knowledge and technical expertise for brokers. He said that as Allianz continues to grow in the mid-market, the focus is on making it easier for brokers to access the right people, in the right regions and offices, with the specialist support behind them to find the right solutions for clients.

The wider read

Leading a sector-by-sector refresh with Wholesale & Retail is a reasonable starting point given how directly that sector's risk profile has been reshaped by exactly the pressures Allianz's own research has tracked: tariff-driven trade fragmentation, supplier concentration risk and international trading complexity all sit close to the surface of day-to-day operations for wholesale and distribution businesses in a way that's less immediately visible in some other mid-market sectors.

Whether increased standard limits and sector specialism actually translate into meaningfully different underwriting outcomes for brokers, rather than simply a repackaged marketing proposition, will become clearer as the remaining sector updates are announced through the rest of the year and brokers can compare how each is actually priced and structured in practice.
