AXA XL, the property & casualty and specialty risk division of AXA Group, has tapped Luis Prato for a major responsibility.

Prato, who serves as insurance active underwriter for Syndicate 2003 as well as regional specialty leader for the UK & Ireland, has taken on the additional remit as chief underwriting officer for UK legal entities Catlin Underwriting Agencies Ltd (CUAL) and XL Catlin Insurance Company UK Limited (XLCICL).

The CUO will be in charge not only of developing core underwriting strategies but also optimising product offering and profitability for both entities. CUAL is a Lloyd’s of London managing agent, while XLCICL offers property & casualty insurance and reinsurance products primarily in the UK and Europe.

“I am delighted that Luis is taking on the role of CUO for UK legal entities,” commented CUAL & XLCICL chief executive Paul Greensmith. “He has built up a strong reputation both within AXA XL and the wider insurance market, and I have every confidence he has exactly the right experience and credentials to fulfil this role.

“The fact that AXA XL was able to fill this position internally is a testament to the talent we have within AXA XL and the opportunities available for advancement.”

Prato’s credentials include time spent at Industrial Risk Insurers, Zurich Global Energy, Allied World Insurance Company, AEGIS London, and Catlin. He started out as a risk engineering consultant for Risk Master Co in 1991.
