Global specialty and property & casualty (re)insurer Canopius Group has appointed Matthew Crane as head of UK distribution. This newly created role is effective immediately, with Crane also joining the Canopius UK executive committee.

Crane has nearly 20 years of senior market experience. He most recently served as chief executive of Q Underwriting within the PIB Group. Previously, Crane spent 15 years at QBE, progressing to the role of managing director for UK and Ireland. He then moved on to Amwins Global Risks where he took on the role of CEO.

At Canopius, Crane will be responsible for strengthening ties with global brokers, regional distribution partners, and strategic clients.

Mark Newman, UK CEO of Canopius, commented on Crane’s new role. In an emailed news release, he emphasised the significance of solidifying relationships with broking and distribution partners for sustained momentum in the UK market.

“By simplifying access to our syndicate’s capacity, and helping our partners understand and value our full product suite and expertise, we can unlock additional new and profitable growth in areas where we have clear strengths,” he said.

Newman also expressed confidence in Crane's abilities, citing his track record and market expertise.

In response, Crane praised the calibre of the underwriting and claims teams within Canopius and spoke of his eagerness to collaborate and fortify the company’s UK presence.

“The opportunities available to Canopius are immense,” said Crane.

In addition to announcing Crane’s appointment, Canopius also named Uwe Schoberth as head of distribution for the US and Bermuda markets. Both Schoberth and Crane will work closely to align distribution strategy, ensuring seamless communication and accessibility for the company’s partners in these markets.
